What to Bring to Your Tax Appointment
Use this checklist to gather your documents before we meet. The more complete your information, the faster and more accurate your return. Not every item applies to every client — bring what's relevant to your situation.
Personal Information
- Government-issued photo ID (driver's license or passport)
- Social Security cards for you, your spouse, and all dependents
- Dates of birth for everyone on the return
- Current mailing address and phone number
- Bank routing & account numbers (for direct deposit of your refund)
- Last year's completed tax return (if we didn't prepare it)
Income Documents
- W-2s from every employer
- 1099-NEC / 1099-MISC (contractor or freelance income)
- 1099-INT / 1099-DIV (interest and dividends)
- 1099-R / SSA-1099 (retirement and Social Security)
- 1099-G (unemployment or state tax refund)
- 1099-K or records of side-gig / online sales income
- Rental property income and expense records
- Alimony received or paid (per divorce decree)
Deductions & Credits
- 1098 Mortgage interest statement
- Property tax records
- 1098-T and student loan interest (1098-E) for education credits
- Childcare provider name, address, EIN/SSN, and amounts paid
- Receipts for medical and dental expenses (over 7.5% AGI threshold)
- Charitable donation receipts and non-cash gift records
- IRA / HSA contribution confirmations
- Energy-efficient home improvement receipts (solar, windows, etc.)
Business / Self-Employment
Complete this section if you own a business, freelance, or have 1099 income.
- Profit & loss statement (income vs. expenses by category)
- Annual mileage log or total business miles driven
- Home office square footage and total home square footage
- Receipts for equipment, software, and supplies purchased
- Estimated tax payments made during the year
- Asset purchase details for depreciation (cost & date placed in service)
- W-2s and 1099s issued to employees or contractors
Health Insurance
- Form 1095-A, 1095-B, or 1095-C (health coverage proof)
- Premium records if self-employed and deducting health insurance
- HSA contribution and distribution records
Life Changes to Mention
- Marriage, divorce, or separation during the year
- Birth or adoption of a child
- Death of a spouse or dependent
- Buying or selling a home
- Moving for a new job
- Retirement or new job with different withholding
- Starting or closing a business
